Pacquiao vs. Matthysse results: Pacquiao scores his first stoppage win in 9 years
It’s 2018, and Manny Pacquiao, the 39 year old Senator, just won a world title with a stoppage win.
In his fight with Lucas Matthysse, Pacquiao turned in his best performance in some time, dropping his opponent twice before finally putting him down in the 7th round. After that third knockdown, the referee waved it off and Pacquiao had the win. Official time was 2:43 in the 7th for the TKO win.
While this certainly wasn’t prime Pacquiao, it was much closer than we saw in the Jeff Horn fight. Pacquiao was the faster man here, with superior boxing, cleaner shots throughout, and nice use of angles. He got off to a good start with a knockdown in the 3rd round off of an uppercut. In the 5th, Pacquiao hurt Matthysse, forcing the tough fighter to take a knee. And then in the 7th, he closed the show. This was the first stoppage win for Pacquiao since beating Miguel Cotto in November 2009.
With that win, Pacquiao extends his record to 60-7-2 and gets back on the winning side after his controversial decision loss to Horn last year. He’s now the WBA Welterweight champion. Post-fight, he was vague about his immediate boxing future - only time will tell what comes next for him.
Matthysse drops to 39-5, and looked pretty bad this fight - tentative and never able to get going at all. His time at the top is probably done at this point, or should be.
